Light! Camera! Action!

A lame title, but a new one! I love that splash of light out there on the horizon.  The waves had died down some by afternoon, but it was still a good show.

Crash! Spash!

 I wasn't able to capture and image of the tallest waves striking the lighthouses.

You can get a sense here of how much spray there was.  It's hazy because my lens was covered by a film of fine mist from standing out in that wind.

Sailing Away

Or kiting away, or whatever. I am embarrassed about how far behind I am on posting. I have SO MANY beautiful pics from this summer to put up. Hang in there, and hang ten, like these guys.

Lakefront Devastation

Last night, I was going to sit down and blog all the beautiful photos I took in June, so that June would not be a post-less month. The wind had other ideas. Our beautiful lakefront trees have been destroyed. We are all devastated. When we get power at our house, I'll try to post some before and after pics. So sad. So, so sad.

Spring Silver

Just a few hundred feet south of my usual vantage point. The combination of sun and churning water made for a silvery surface. From Monday, 5/16/11.

More Misery

High winds, endless rain (sometimes frozen), winter goes on and on (I forgot to mention that it SNOWED yesterday. It melted by noon, but still).

Splash and Crash

Very wavy, with some early morning sunshine to make it more dramatic. Still cold.

Winter: The Return

A cold front is blowing in a lot of windy misery. As you can see, there's grass, so it's not exactly freezing, but it is wool coat (but not down) and gloves (but not hats) weather. I miss spring! From Thursday, 4/14/11.

Winter Redux

After last week's springlike weather, winter returned with a vengeance this week, with sub-freezing temperatures, harsh winds, and a few dustings of snow. So the Lake was looking pretty brown most of the week. From Tuesday, 3/22/11.

Tempestuous

That is an angry lake out there. From noonish.

Apocalyptic

The weird angle of the lens and the hole in the clouds combined to make it look like a purple hologram was hurtling towards earth in this super-scary post for today!

Everyone Knows It's Windy!

That title had to be used eventually. Wednesday was a perfect day for para-surfing, or whatever this sport is called.

Heavy and Strong

It was stormy and cold yesterday. One of the interesting things about heavy wind is watching the birds. The seagull (black speck) in sky was stationary for the 60 seconds or so that I was taking pictures. When I take the time to notice, I often see them flying against the wind, sort of a seagull treadmill that keeps them in the same spot until they decide to move out of the current. When they turn around, they quickly and effortlessly float along with the wind, and travel far in a matter of moments.

Smudge

I know there's a better synonym for this, but I can't find one. The sky is amazing. It's very windy, and the clouds were moving.

All that snow piled up to make some interesting formation, as predicted.
Breaking waves will wear this down by the afternoon, I'm sure.

Heaving

We have had an impressive amount of snow today (not as much as the east coast, but a foot is impressive) and it's also windy. We went down to the beach to see what the Lake was doing. Huge heaving waves that occasionally broke and splashed into the air, which became ice chunks on the way down. The surface of the water looked like a desert that was alive, with the dunes shifting around before your eyes. Through it all, brave gulls were flying and diving. It was very hard to take photos because of the blowing snow on the lens (and in the eyes) and the cold wind that made it hard to be out of gloves for more than a minute. The shoreline ice formations should be amazing this week.

Striking

I know I keep taking this same view, but look at it! Yesterday it was still and clear, today it is crazy with energy and the clouds are billowing. The sheen from the sun contrasts with the foamy waves.

Windy New Year
