Sandy Afternoon Update

Lake Michigan still looks pretty much as it does in the post directly below, from this morning, here at my vantage point.

However, other people around here, and in Chicago, have found some great wave action.

Expecting Sandy

This photo, from this morning at 9:05am, shows waves that have grown a lot since yesterday afternoon.

Still, I would say that this is not really unusual for a Lake Michigan storm.  We have lots of days where the waves are pretty big and loud. Here's a video from the same time, 9am this morning, October 30, 2012:



Loud, but still not too violent.  Will update later today.

Back! With Hurricane Sandy Reports

Greetings all,
Believe it or not, I HAVE been taking photos since May, just not posting them.  Eventually, I will do some back blogging and post the spring, summer, and early fall photos of the lake.

For right now, I want to respond to several requests for photos of the waves on Lake Michigan.  The effects of Hurricane Sandy will be comparatively light here in the Midwest, but there are high waves predicted for Lake Michigan over the next several days, so I am chronicling them here.

For starters, here's yesterday morning (10/29/12) about 9am:

Here's yesterday afternoon, around 3:30:

The waves are definitely picking up by then.  Next entry will be this morning, 10/30/12.  Stay tuned.

Fierce

I know. The ocean-dwellers scoff at the notion that this is fierce, but it was very windy and wavy all day on this day. For a lake, anyway. From 4/20/12.

Buds!

Unlike last year, when Spring was delayed by a month, the buds are out early. From 4/05/12.

Foreboding

A storm brewing out on the Lake never really made it to shore, but the effect was still quite sinister. From 3/27/12.

Light! Camera! Action!

A lame title, but a new one! I love that splash of light out there on the horizon.  The waves had died down some by afternoon, but it was still a good show.

Crash! Spash!

 I wasn't able to capture and image of the tallest waves striking the lighthouses.

You can get a sense here of how much spray there was.  It's hazy because my lens was covered by a film of fine mist from standing out in that wind.

So far behind.  I just need to post these and get on with my life, no cute captions this time.

 What an incredible place to live and work. Wow.

Pouty

Another storm last night, but no glorious morning. Or afternoon. Just a petulant, frowny, in-a-bad-mood giant body of water out there. From this afternoon.

After the Storm

 In the wee hours of the morning, there was a terrible storm. Lots of rain and wind, waves I could hear from my closed up house three blocks away. But oh, what a beautiful morning! These were taken around 9am.

Backblogging: The non-calm before the non-storm

I was out for a walk around 7pm on June 30th, and noticed that the sky looked weird and the Lake was roiling. I even took a video to try out my new phone video feature:

As you can tell, it was NOISY and wavy. And then, about 90 minutes later, this.

Spring Silver

Just a few hundred feet south of my usual vantage point. The combination of sun and churning water made for a silvery surface. From Monday, 5/16/11.

Lucked Out

Haziness has given way to choppiness (which, over the weekend, has become full-blown storminess). (Note seagulls in lower right, just below the 05.) From Friday, 5/13/11.

Channeling

The Pike River usually empties pretty directly into the Lake, but due to big storms/waves that piled up a lot of sand, it had to carve a channel into the beach, leaving a sand bar for the seagulls.
They are making full use of it.

More Misery

High winds, endless rain (sometimes frozen), winter goes on and on (I forgot to mention that it SNOWED yesterday. It melted by noon, but still).

Splash and Crash

Very wavy, with some early morning sunshine to make it more dramatic. Still cold.

Winter: The Return

A cold front is blowing in a lot of windy misery. As you can see, there's grass, so it's not exactly freezing, but it is wool coat (but not down) and gloves (but not hats) weather. I miss spring! From Thursday, 4/14/11.
