Parallel Lines

The contrails in the sky line up almost perfectly with the waves. Taken about 9am.

Purple

A pretty sunset bonus as I was leaving the office yesterday. Thursday, 2/25/10.

Crisp and Liquid

The crisp, cold winter day with bright sunshine contrasts with the flowing beauty of the Lake.

Cloud Shroud

The clouds created a cover over the sun. But it managed to peek through a little.
An eerie effect. From Wednesday, 2/24.

Impressive

To me, anyway. These are all from Tuesday, 2/23/10.

Snowy Gray

From Monday, 2/22/10. It has been a wintry week.

Lake, Placid

An Olympics-related pun. Winter, even. But look how calm and lovely the lake looked on Thursday afternoon, 2/18. It looked pretty much the same way on 2/19, so no pic from that day.

Far and Near

The cliffs are much eroded, but still lovely. From Wednesday.

Several amazing photos from today. Clouds look lovely in the sunshine.

Here's a flock of Canada Geese.
And here's a flock of seagulls.
Sharing the same small harbor space. From Sunday, 2/14.

Sign of the Season

One of my favorite signs. Not very many places where you could find a sign like this, I'm guessing.

Afternoon Island view

The ice cliffs have eroded into islands (or icebergs?) and are enjoying the much calmer Lake today.

Now here are some icebergs!

All that snow piled up to make some interesting formation, as predicted.
Breaking waves will wear this down by the afternoon, I'm sure.
Here's the panoramic view.

Heaving

We have had an impressive amount of snow today (not as much as the east coast, but a foot is impressive) and it's also windy. We went down to the beach to see what the Lake was doing. Huge heaving waves that occasionally broke and splashed into the air, which became ice chunks on the way down. The surface of the water looked like a desert that was alive, with the dunes shifting around before your eyes. Through it all, brave gulls were flying and diving. It was very hard to take photos because of the blowing snow on the lens (and in the eyes) and the cold wind that made it hard to be out of gloves for more than a minute. The shoreline ice formations should be amazing this week.

Cliffs, Ripples

The topping of ice chunks was gently rippling this morning.
A few days of not photographing the cliffs, and look what happens! Lots of build up. 12-14 inches of snow is forecast during the next 24 hours. Will it happen?

Undulations

Once again, my inadequate camera, plus lack of facility with video or audio, make it impossible to capture the amazing combination of ice and motion on the lake this afternoon. The surface is covered with ice chunks to about 30 feet from shore, but they are coming closer in with each gigantic wave. The waves are big and LOUD (due to the ice chunks). And the surface of the water rocks back and forth before breaking near the shore.
And then in the little covelet nearest my vantage point, it is still and full of roundish discs of ice. And it's snowing. So the interesting formations should continue into tomorrow.

The Light Beyond

Beyond what? I can't decide if this is mist, a giant cloud, fog, or what, but the light is the sun, and this is a moody photo. From 9:00am.

Cry Me A River

A river of flotsam between ice islands today.

Trapezoids

These ice formations are so amazing I had to post all the pictures that turned out okay. Just look. Stunning.

Ice, Far and Near

Ice off on the horizon.
Ducks in flight above water laced with ice. From Monday.
