Cloud bank

Slightly less ominous than yesterday (though I haven't looked at the Dow this afternoon), this photo showcases the lovely cloud formations often seen above the Lake. Best "bank" news of the day!

Somber and Gray

This was taken this morning, the first non-blue variation of the fall. Did the Lake know about the coming recession/depression?

More sparkles

Late in posting this shot, which is from this morning when the sun was shining brightly on the lake. The window from which this was taken is terribly dirty, so apologies for flaws in this otherwise lovely view.

haze and sparkles

Here's some variation: not so much blue as gray, with haze allowing a few rays of sunshine to sparkle on the water.

venturing out

Today is a perfect early Autumn day, mild and sunny. I took these from right outside my office building, proof that I do not work from a lakeshore cabin. The bird in the first shot was a bonus, so I'm including two today.

Ho Hum

Still blue and fairly calm, but that's a nice sky right there. I did get some beautiful sunrise pics this morning, but on the other camera. Maybe this weekend I can unlock its secret stash of Great Lakes photos and start to share them...

afternoon view

Busy day, just got into the office to take a pic. I thought maybe the afternoon light would look a lot different, but it doesn't. One of these days we're going to have some variation, I promise.

Sky with jet trail

This is from this morning, and you can see the jet trail in the sky above a mostly quiet Lake. Sometimes the sky is the primary show. Cloud pictures coming soon...

Waves! Well, ripples anyway.

See? Now we have a slightly greener blue, and a few waves. This is what the Lake looks like when it is heading toward green.

This morning I took a run/walk along the lakefront, and got to see the amazing sunrise. The sky was just slightly orange and then, all of a sudden...POP! the sun rose over the horizon, a little orange glowing ball. I had no idea it happened so quickly. I even brought the small home camera, only to discover the battery was dead. Maybe tomorrow...

Obama's Great Lakes Initiative

I promised news, this seems like news: Obama proposes $5-billion fund for Great Lakes

As I expect readers across the political spectrum (eventually), I will say that despite Obama's residence in Illinois, I don't think preserving and protecting the Great Lakes is a partisan or even a regional concern. It's a huge source of fresh water, which will become increasingly scare as the century rolls on.

[Also, Michelle Obama's father worked for the water filtration plant in Chicago. The family has more than a passing familiarity with Lake issues.]

Still with the blue, the sunshine

Anyone unfamiliar with Lake Michigan might think, "Of course the Lake is blue again. It's water. Water is blue." To this I say, yes, usually, and right now we're having a streak of blue days. But just you wait.....

Glaring sunlight, still blue

The sun is so bright this morning that it was almost painful to take the daily picture. But the Lake, as you can see, is smooth and blue. No ship, only a few small boats on the Lake this morning, but I can't see them from here.

First picture, with bonus ship included

Everyday when I take my son to school, we drive past the Lake and I ask him "What color is the Lake today, B?" Today's observation ("blue!") included this giant ship. So, though the picture is not the clearest, it does illustrate one of the fascinating things about the Lake: you never know what you're going to see.
